Brief Introduction:
Varied walk with excellent view points, through a pretty valley and quiet
country roads
Full Description:
A walk encompassing the historic market town of Ulverston, leading to
the optional route to the Sir John Barrow monument, modelled on the Eddystone
Lighthouse and erected in 1850.
1. Turn right out of the Tourist Information Centre, down Newmarket Street, left into Market Street, right at the War Memorial into King Street and straight to the end past Kings Arms and on into Church Walk. Walk on through the churchyard, (keeping the Church on the left) walk down the narrow path bordered by stone walls bearing left through the kissing gate at the end and take the main path up to the monument. On a clear day view are excellent of the Lakeland fells, the Estuary and Morecambe Bay. After admiring the view, retrace your steps down hill until almost at the bottom where the path forks. Take the left had fork and follow this path which contours round the hill gently leading down to the main A590. Go through the iron kissing gate and turn left and walk along the pavement as far as the lane on the left (about 300 yds).
2. Turn left and walk up this tarmac lane and take the track on the left just before the buildings. Go through the gate and continue along the grassy track and on to the track through woodland. At the next fork follow a yellow waymark arrow and continue contouring the hill over a stile to a path flanked by hedgerows to reach a gate at The Falls.
3. Go through the gate and straight ahead to a second gate. Go through this and follow the waymarks keep to the left of the house and left on to a track, continue past The Falls along this lane as far as the road junction. Turn left and continue to the next junction and turn right (signposted Broughton). Walk along this road for about 0.5mile. Take care on the road. Take the first lane on the left past High Flan Farm.
4. After passing Beckside Farm go straight across crossroads bearing left along the lane to signpost for Bortree Stile. Keeping the houses on the left, go through the gate and immediately left over a wooden stile. You are now on the Cumbria Way, (a long distance footpath between Ulverston and Carlisle). Follow the stream downhill to a stile on the right to a grassy path leading to some woodland. Go over the second stile down some stone steps and continue on downhill heading towards Old Hall Farm and the corner of the woodland (on right). Go over stile, across field to stile in corner by left hand side of farmhouse. Turn right over this and follow stream to another stile.
5. Turn right and walk through farmyard following track past silo. Bear left beside wall (good views of the Hoad Monument on left). Where track divides take left hand fork through lower gate and continue across fields heading for a row of houses in the distance. The track crosses a stream half way along. Head for the stile by footpath sign and turn immediately left, through kissing gate and follow this path between walls turning right over bridge. This path will lead onto The Gill car park and the town centre.
